“Food is a Munition of War” was rife throughout pamphlets instructing civilians one how to use their ration coupons. Food for soldiers was as important to the war effort as bullets and bombs, deemed by US soldiers as the “first munition of war.”(1)
This poster demonstrates who most austerity campaigns were directed to; housewives. As the people in change of food in households, women were expected to ensure the responsible, waste free consumption of food.(2)
