Due to rationing and the expense of meat, lamb and mutton were highly viable options.(1) Eating within the nation’s means and staying within the limits of rations for the good of the war effort meant that eating lamb and mutton, an act that would not detract food from the armed forces, was an act of patriotism. This sentiment has remained in Australia.
